Memphis is a city built on resilience, culture, and community—and its young people are no exception. Through the Youth Advocacy Board (YAB), youth and young adults in Shelby County are stepping into leadership roles and using their voices to shape real solutions to challenges facing their peers, including housing instability and homelessness.
The Memphis YAB creates a space where young people with lived experience can share their stories, connect with one another, and influence systems that directly impact their lives. These youth are not just participants—they are leaders, advocates, and change-makers. By working alongside local organizations and community partners, they help ensure that programs designed to support youth are informed by those who understand the issues firsthand.
In Memphis, YAB members engage in a range of activities, including outreach efforts, peer support initiatives, and community education. They help identify gaps in services and advocate for more equitable access to housing, mental health resources, and employment opportunities. Their insights are critical in shaping policies and programs that are not only effective but also compassionate and youth-centered.
Beyond advocacy, the YAB fosters personal growth and leadership development. Members gain valuable skills in communication, teamwork, and public speaking, preparing them for future opportunities while strengthening their confidence and sense of purpose.
Most importantly, the Memphis YAB reminds us that youth voices matter. When young people are given a platform to lead, they bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a deep commitment to creating a better future—not just for themselves, but for their entire community.
